Although it might not be apparent, 80% of dogs and 70% of cats show signs of oral disease by age 3.  Just as dental care is critical for healthy lives in people, the same applies to your pets.  Bad breath caused by dental disease is not just a nuisance, but the associated infection of the teeth and gums can easily lead to more serious health problems including heart, lung, and kidney disease. These concerns make proper dental care for your pet critical in prolonging life and maintaining his or her health.

Dental Health in Your Pet

We understand that there are three distinct steps to dental health for your pet:
  1. Dental exams
  2. Dental cleanings
  3. Home dental care

Dental Exams

Our veterinarians are skilled at basic small animal dental care and will assist you in developing a plan for positive oral hygiene and home dental care.

Schedule an appointment with our dental service to examine your pet's teeth and overall health.  Our doctors will then make a recommendation based on their assessment of your pet's condition.

Dental Cleaning Procedure

For the safety and comfort of your pet, dental cleanings must be performed under general anesthesia.
  • A pre-surgical blood panel is run to ensure your pet’s ability to tolerate the anesthesia.
  • Intravenous fluids are administered throughout the procedure for cardiovascular support.
  • Your pet's heart rate, blood pressure, and temperature are closely monitored throughout the procedure and recovery until your pet is awake and alert.
  • While your pet is anesthetized, we scale the teeth above and below the gumline with an ultrasonic scaler, probe the gum line to evaluate for periodontal disease, x-ray the teeth to evaluate the health of the roots, then polish the teeth.  This is all very similar to what human dentists do to you.

Home Dental Care

A simple home care routine is easy to establish and significantly improves the oral health of your dog or cat.

Our veterinarians will work with you to develop a dental care plan that will  work best for you and your pet.

Feather and Fur Animal Hospital supports the excellent protocols and recommendations of the American Animal Hospital Association (AAHA) regarding dental care for dogs and cats. The AAHA’s Dental Care Guidelines for Dogs and Cats were designed to provide veterinarians with a framework for small animal dentistry practice, including dental exams, cleanings, and surgical procedures. View this brief and easy-to-read summary of the AAHA Dental Care Guidelines for Dogs and Cats.
