COVID-19 Updates

We continue to help your pets as our city and state follow Stay-at-Home orders.  Curbside drop-off of your pet will continue.  When you arrive, please remain in your vehicle and call us at (808) 254-1548.   One of our staff members will come out to your vehicle to assist you.  Due to our limited number of parking spots, we kindly ask that you utilize our parking area only for dropping off and picking up your pets.  We will call you when your pet is ready for you to pick them up.

Many of you have expressed concern about COVID-19 and your pets.  This page provides important information for families with pets and an overview of the precautions our practice is taking to protect our staff, our patients and their families.

Q: Can pets become infected with COVID-19?
A: In Hong Kong, one dog tested positive for COVID-19 but did not show signs of illness.  The dog had been living in close contact with an infected person.  At this time, the CDC has not received any reports of pets or other animals becoming sick with COVID-19 nor do they have evidence that pets can be a source of COVID-19 infection to humans.

Q: What precautions should families with pets be taking right now?
A: Please follow the advice found at coronavirus.gov regarding protecting yourself from the virus. In addition, it is a good idea to wash your hands anytime you have had direct contact with animals. This is especially important when they have had recent exposure with people who are sick from any cause. You should also call your veterinarian any time your pet is experiencing signs of illness. Finally, you should include your pets in your emergency preparedness planning, including by keeping a two-week supply of food and medications on hand. For detailed information on emergency planning for pets, please visit www.avma.org/resources/pet-owners/emergencycare/pets-and-disasters.

Q: If someone in my household tests positive for COVID-19, what precautions should be taken?
A: The American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) recommends that individuals infected with COVID-19 should isolate themselves from their pets in the same manner as they isolate themselves from other people. If possible, have a healthy person in your home take care of your pets while you recover. Tell your doctor and public health officials that you have pets in your home. Also, please tell your veterinarian that there is a COVID-19 infection in your home before making an appointment or coming into the office.

Q: What precautions is Feather and Fur Animal Hospital taking?
A: Our team disinfects commonly touched surfaces regularly, including door handles, keyboards, and phones.   As of Saturday, March 21, we are implementing curbside drop-off.  We ask that all clients remain outside our building and that patients be dropped off for their visit.  When you arrive, remain in your vehicle and call our hospital at (808) 254-1548.  Information will be taken over the phone and someone will come out to your car to check your pet in.  Your doctor will call you by phone after your pet's examination to discuss your pet's condition with you.
In addition, to conserve PPE and encourage social distancing, we are postponing less urgent procedures and office visits through at least the month of April.  Please call us if you have questions about any of this.  We reassess our procedures and protocols daily to address the evolving concerns of this pandemic.  Thank you for being patient and flexible with us during this time.

Q: Where can I go for more information?
A: The best site for the latest information is coronavirus.gov. For veterinary-specific information, visit www.avma.org/resources-tools/animal-health-and-welfare/covid-19. For questions involving your particular pet(s), please contact our office at (808) 254-1548.

We appreciate the trust you place in our hospital.  We will continue to do our very best to keep your pets and your family healthy, regardless of the circumstances. Please help us by avoiding coming in when you are sick and by telling us if your pet has been exposed to a person infected by COVID-19 BEFORE making an appointment.
